At Grace, we desire to live every area of life under
the rule and reign of Christ. And because Christ is Lord
over all creation, He has a stake in what we make of his
creation. The arts provide us opportunities to make
statements - articulated through music, dance, drama,
visual arts, etc. - which express our relationship to God
and his creation.
Below are some of the ways we engage in living out an aesthetic
life under the rule of Christ.
Labrys Contemporary Arts Gallery
Labrys Contemporary Arts Gallery is a non-profit, fine art
gallery. Labrys' purpose is to provide a forum for
Long Beach, and the greater Los Angeles area, to interact
with high quality, spiritually meaningful fine art. Labrys
(pronounced lab-ris) also seeks to serve contemporary artists
by exhibiting their work in a professional and thoughtful
manner to an ever-widening audience.
We believe that art was specifically designed by God to
be a medium for the discovery and communication of ideas
and values. Labrys exists to facilitate the expression of
art that is a medium for contemplation and conversation
on life, God, humanity, nature, beauty, relationships, sin,
and redemption.
Our emphasis is on the quality of work, both conceptually
and aesthetically, from a variety of approaches and mediums.
Christian subject matter is not a prerequisite, but rather
the motivation in creating the work stemming from either
a Christian world-view or a profound interest in Christian
perspectives.
Labrys Contemporary Art Gallery is located at 36th Street. and
Linden Avenue. in Long Beach, CA.
Film Discussion Group
The film discussion group was formed to develop a perceptive,
informed, and truth-centered critical approach to film,
which seeks to recognize the work on its own terms, articulate
a Christian response, and use the experience as a means
of reflecting on culture, realizing grace and beauty, and
finding bridges into conversations with others.
The range of films the group has screened has included current
mainstream films (The Truman Show, Chocolat), independent
films (Three Seasons, The Big Kahuna), foreign films (La
Haine, Talk to Her), genre films (anime, religious, etc.),
as well as a selection of non-narrative films (documentaries,
experimental, classic).
Writers' Workshop
The writers' workshop began out of a desire to develop
a community of creative literary artists who could encourage
and sharpen one another's skills through various projects
and writing exercises. Though still in the formative stages,
one of the initial projects is a collection of short stories
entitled "Next Ten Exits" which tells ten different
imaginative stories which take place in Long Beach, structured
around the ten streets which exit off of the 405 freeway
within the city limits.
Arts Liturgy
The annual Arts Liturgy is a multi-media, interactive,
worship service. The concept of a journey is at the heart
of the night's art forms; as a gathering, as a community,
we travel through a liturgy. A liturgy is simply an order
of service, a form of structure that is intended to direct
one's thoughts and focus one's worship. Many of the activities
of the evening are intended to reference points in church
history and to remind us that we are part of a long and
rich tradition. As we view and experience dance performance,
sculptural installation, photography, spoken word, song,
and much more, it is our hope that this worship experience
will provide an entirely fresh viewpoint.
